Contrary to recent recent media reports suggesting that Delhi Capitals might release their captain Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL mega auction, it has been confirmed that Pant will remain the team’s top retention choice. This news comes on the same day Pant smashed his 6th Test century, equaling MS Dhoni’s record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper.
Pant Set to Be Retained
According to reports, Delhi Capitals have finalized their decision to retain Pant after a recent meeting between Pant and the franchise’s co-owner Parth Jindal in Mumbai. Currently, Pant earns INR 16 crore, a figure that could rise based on the BCCI’s retention fee guidelines and the total player purse allowed per franchise.
Stellar Form and Leadership
Rishabh Pant returned to IPL 2024 after a long injury layoff and led Delhi Capitals as captain. He had a fantastic season, scoring 446 runs in 13 matches at an impressive strike rate of 155. This performance made him the highest run-scorer for DC in the season and solidified his position as the franchise’s all-time leading run-scorer with 3284 runs. Pant also showed improved fitness during his recovery, which has been evident in his performances for India, including his recent century against Bangladesh.
Possible Retentions for Delhi Capitals
The BCCI has not yet released the official retention policy for IPL 2024, but reports suggest Delhi Capitals may retain more than five players if allowed. In addition to Pant, the franchise is likely to hold on to Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, while considering Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs as their overseas retentions. If retention rules permit, uncapped player Abhishek Porel could also be on their list.
