On a brighter note for Indian cricket, the young wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh has been felicitated in an elaborate function in Kolkata after her stellar show in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
The West Bengal government, in collaboration with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), organised the event at the iconic Eden Gardens, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee felicitated the 22-year-old cricketer. Richa, who played a crucial role in India’s maiden Women’s World Cup triumph against South Africa with a 52-run victory at DY Patil Stadium, received the state’s highest civilian award, Banga Bhushan, along with a cash prize of Rs 34 lakh. She was also appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), marking a remarkable achievement at such a young age.
Mamata Banerjee announced plans to build a cricket stadium in Darjeeling on a 27-acre plot, named “Richa Ghosh Stadium”. “Richa became a world champion at just 22. I want her achievements to inspire future generations. This stadium will be a tribute to her performance,” said the CM.
It will be the first time in women’s cricketing history that in the player’s name a stadium is being built.
The ceremony also witnessed the presence of former Indian legend Jhulan Goswami and CAB President Sourav Ganguly, who honored Richa with a gold-plated bat and a signed ball.
Richa Ghosh was one of the standout performers of India during the World Cup. The wicketkeeper opener scored 235 runs in 8 matches, with her top score being an unbeaten 94 in the league stages. She contributed substantially in the semi-final and final, too, as India ended its long wait for a Women’s World Cup trophy.
This recognition not only acknowledges Richa’s individual brilliance but also marks a significant milestone in motivating young girls to take up cricket and strive for heights at an international level.
