After numerous speculations, Sourav Ganguly’s biopic is nearly finalizing who will portray Sourav on screen. Rajkummar Rao, known for delivering several superhit films and creating a storm with a popular song in ‘Stree 2’ with Shraddha Kapoor, seems to be the frontrunner.
According to AnandBazar Patrika, negotiations have progressed significantly. If no last-minute changes occur, Rajkummar is likely to be cast. The film’s producers from ‘Love Films’, Ankur Garg and Love Ranjan, have visited Kolkata several times over the past two and a half years, gathering material for the biopic. The film’s preparation is in its final stages, with shooting expected to commence soon.
Initially, Ranbir Kapoor was Sourav’s preferred choice, and efforts were made to convince him. However, scheduling became challenging. Other names like Vicky Kaushal were also considered but couldn’t be finalized. Eventually, Rajkummar Rao emerged as the preferred choice for everyone, including Sourav himself.
The director is confirmed to be Vikramaditya Motwane, known for ‘Udaan’, which won seven Filmfare Awards, and ‘Lootera’, which performed well at the box office. Motwane had previously directed Rajkummar Rao in ‘Trapped’. The producers recently attended an India-England T20 match at Eden Gardens, where they discussed the biopic. Sourav’s childhood friend and former cricketer Sanjay Das is also playing a significant role in the biopic’s production.
When approached, Sanjay Das maintained discretion, stating that details would be announced at the appropriate time. Rajkummar Rao’s recent success with ‘Stree 2’ has positioned him among Bollywood’s top actors. He has previously portrayed characters in sports-related films and has knowledge about cricket. Interestingly, his wife Patralekhaa is also Bengali, which might help him with cultural nuances.

Like other sports biopics, specialized training and character immersion are expected. Previous examples include Sushant Singh Rajput spending time with M.S. Dhoni and Aamir Khan taking cricket lessons from Sachin Tendulkar. Capturing Sourav’s famous “God is on the offside, then Sourav” essence on screen will be challenging, requiring extensive cricket training for the actor.
