Remembering Phill Hughes: The Day When A Cricket Ball Led To A Disaster

On this day, November 27, 2014, one of the brightest batting stars of that time, Phil Hughes died due to a cerebral hemorrhage after he was struck by a bouncer.

November 27: A day when a whole cricketing fraternity was shattered after hearing that a cricketer died by a cricket ball on November 27. The player was none other than Australia’s southpaw Phill Hughes (then aged 25) who was struck by a bouncer on the side of his head, below the helmet.

While playing a Shield match in Sydney on November 25, 2014, Hughes was struck on the neck when he failed to connect with an attempted hook shot, bringing about a cerebral hemorrhage. He was immediately rushed into the hospital for surgery; he did not recover consciousness. His funeral was held at Macksville on December 3, attended by cricketers from everywhere in Australia and other prominent figures, including Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

During that time, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2014-15 was about to start. After the incident, Indian players including Virat Kohli and other members paid a heartful tribute to Phill Hughes.
