The former India head coach and player Rahul Dravid, fondly called “The Wall” of Indian cricket, was never known for explosive big-hitting, yet his flawless technique and unbreakable concentration made him one of the game’s finest batters. Facing the fiercest bowlers across all five days of a Test match, Dravid’s textbook style and calm presence at the crease became a masterclass for generations to follow.
Recently, on the Haal Chaal Aur Sawaal Podcast with Ashish Kaushik, Dravid reflected on his inspirations and batting philosophy, while sharing fascinating insights about cricketing legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli.
Sunil Gavaskar – The Role Model
Dravid revealed that Gavaskar was his first cricketing idol. “Gavaskar was a beautifully balanced player. There was a stillness when he stood, which I admired,” Dravid said.
Being taller than Gavaskar, Dravid admitted he had to find his own stance and comfort, but the sense of balance Gavaskar displayed stayed with him throughout his career.
Why Shorter Batters Have an Advantage
Dravid went on to explain why many legendary batters including Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, and even Sir Don Bradman had exceptional balance.
“Shorter people have the advantage of looking more balanced because the centre of gravity is lower. That’s what they say,” Dravid pointed out.
Virat Kohli Gets a Mention
In a light-hearted remark, Dravid added – “Kohli is short-ish. Virat Kohli might not like me calling him shortish, though.”
A Lesson from ‘The Wall’
Dravid’s reflections are more than just nostalgia; they’re a guide to understanding what makes a world-class batter. Balance, technique, and mental stillness, according to Dravid, remain the foundation of great batting – a philosophy that has defined his legendary career.
