Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir recently faced a challenging first round of interviews for the role of Team India‘s head coach. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) was well-prepared to question Gambhir and former Indian women’s team coach WV Raman as they outlined their visions for the position soon to be vacated by Rahul Dravid. While Gambhir attended the interview virtually, Raman was present in person.

What was Gautam Gambhir Asked About During Team India Interview?
The CAC, appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), asked three key questions, according to RevSportz:
- What are your plans for the team’s coaching staff?
- How will you manage the transition phase with some aging players in both the batting and bowling units?
- What are your thoughts on split captaincy, fitness standards regarding workload management, and addressing the team’s inability to win ICC trophies?
Gambhir’s candidacy was discussed even before he formally applied, with his successful leadership of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) positioning him as a strong contender to succeed Dravid.
“I’ve always rated Gautam Gambhir as one of the best captains in the IPL. He’s always been intense and tactically sound. His success comes purely from his own efforts. He is committed to cricket and does not try to conform to others’ expectations. If he takes up the India role, I wish him all the very best,” Raman had told the portal.
WV Raman had also expressed his support for Gambhir, wishing the 2011 World Cup winner well if he assumes the role.
Gambhir has made several demands to the CAC, the most notable being the establishment of separate teams for white-ball and red-ball cricket. The BCCI is not expected to announce the new head coach until the final stages of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
