PM Modi Lauds Team India’s Grit and Comeback
Prime Minister Modi congratulated the women cricketers for their remarkable comeback in the tournament after suffering three consecutive defeats in the group stage. He praised the team’s mental strength to rise above online trolling and reclaim their focus, calling their victory a story of true character and collective determination.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Nostalgic Reflection
Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled meeting the Prime Minister back in 2017, after India had finished as runners-up. “At that time, we met PM sir without the trophy,” she said with a smile. “Now that we’ve met him with the trophy, we hope this happens more often!”
Her words drew laughter and applause from the room, symbolizing how far Indian women’s cricket has come since that day.

Smriti Mandhana and the Power of Motivation
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana expressed her gratitude towards PM Modi for continuously inspiring the team. “PM sir’s words have always motivated us. Today, girls are excelling in every field and much of that encouragement has come from his vision for women empowerment,” she said.
Deepti Sharma’s Special Moment
All-rounder Deepti Sharma, visibly emotional, said she had been eagerly waiting for this meeting. “PM sir had told us back in 2017 to keep working hard, and one day we would achieve our dream. That day has finally come,” she shared.
The Prime Minister also took note of Deepti’s faith, referring to her ‘Jai Shri Ram’ post on Instagram and the Hanuman tattoo on her arm. Deepti replied that her devotion gives her inner strength on and off the field.
PM’s Candid Cricket Conversations
In a light-hearted exchange, PM Modi showed his familiarity with the game, recalling Harleen Deol’s iconic 2021 catch against England – a moment he had even praised publicly back then.
He also spoke to Harmanpreet Kaur about the ball she “pocketed” after the World Cup final. The skipper chuckled and said, “I was lucky the ball came to me — I had to keep it!”
The Prime Minister then mentioned Amanjot Kaur’s now-famous fumbled-yet-successful catch, joking that, “While catching, you must have had your eyes on the ball, but after the catch, your eyes must have been on the trophy.”
A Fit India Message for the Future
Towards the end of the meeting, PM Modi urged the champions to carry forward the message of the Fit India Movement, especially among young girls. He emphasized the importance of physical fitness, warning against rising obesity levels, and encouraged players to visit schools to inspire the next generation.
In a touching moment, player Kranti Gaud mentioned that her brother was a big fan of the Prime Minister – to which PM Modi extended an open invitation for him to visit.
