Gautam Gambhir has widely been reported to be the to be the top contender to replace Rahul Dravid as the next head coach after the latter’ tenure expires following T20 World Cup 2024. Reports suggest Gambhir and WV Raman were the only 2 candidates to apply for the head coach position.
As per a recent reports, Gambhir held discussions with BCCI’s Cricket Administrative Committee (CAC) last week, outlining five conditions for his acceptance of the India head coach role.
5 Demands of Gautam Gambhir to Assume Role as India’s Head Coach
Firstly, Gambhir seeks complete autonomy over Team India’s cricketing operations.
Secondly, he has requested the authority to select his own support staff. Presently, the support staff consists of Vikram Rathour as batting coach, Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach, and T Dilip as fielding coach.
The third, and possibly most contentious, requirement is Gambhir’s proposal to drop four senior Indian players—Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Shami, if they fail to perform in the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Additionally, Gambhir advocates for a distinct team dedicated to Test Cricket.
Lastly, he emphasizes the need to begin outlining preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup immediately.

Gautam Gambhir on India head coach role
‘I don’t foresee that far into the future,’ responded Gautam Gambhir when asked about the possibility of becoming India’s head coach.
He acknowledged the difficulty of answering such a question at present, stating, ‘You’re really putting me on the spot with these tough questions. It’s hard to say right now. What I can say is that I’m content where I am. I’ve just concluded a fantastic journey with Kolkata Knight Riders, so let’s savor that moment. I’m in a very positive state of mind at the moment.’
