New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro jumped to the 37-year-old’s defense over criticism from Portuguese fans and media over his recent performances.

Ronaldo, who has been benched by Manchester United, missed several big chances during the international break while starting for his country. The Portuguese easily defeated the Czech Republic but lost 1-0 to Spain. The Spanish got its first competitive away victory against Portugal since a 2-1 World Cup qualifying triumph in 1934. After the match against Spain, Ronaldo was torn to shreds in his home nation, which infuriated his sister.

Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, wrote on an Instagram story, “The current times don’t surprise me at all. The Portuguese spit on the plate they eat, it has always been that way. It is necessary to give a hand to those who have always given theirs to Portugal. But the Portuguese [fans] can be sick, petty, soulless, stupid … and forever ungrateful.”

This is expected to be Ronaldo’s final FIFA World Cup, and he hopes to go out on top as a key figure in the 2022 lineup. But his poor form has led some people to question whether he should still be in a nailed-on starter position.

The 2022-23 campaign has been a testing one for the Portugal international as, after failing to secure a transfer away from Old Trafford over the summer, he has found himself benched on a regular basis by new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

The Portugal legend will have a chance to turn the narrative this weekend when Manchester United meets Manchester City on October 2.
