Amid rising speculation about India’s participation in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy possibly being moved out of Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly denied reports suggesting any such change. A report from Telegraph UK had claimed that India’s matches might be relocated to the UAE due to ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, but the PCB has rejected these claims.
India’s Matches to be Shifted to UAE?
The report from the Telegraph UK mentioned that if India qualified for the final, the match could be moved from Lahore to Dubai. It also suggested that the semi-finals might be considered for relocation. These claims raised concerns that political tensions between the two nations could once again impact India’s participation in tournaments held in Pakistan, potentially leading the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make logistical adjustments.
India-Pakistan Political Tensions Affecting Cricket
India has not toured Pakistan since 2008 due to strained political relations, preventing any bilateral series or participation in tournaments on Pakistani soil. This history fueled the speculation about India’s involvement in the 2025 Champions Trophy and potential venue changes.
PCB Responds: No Plans to Relocate Matches
In response to the Telegraph UK report, the PCB issued a strong statement denying any plans to shift matches outside Pakistan. The board clarified that all efforts are focused on hosting the tournament within Pakistan’s borders.
“Despite the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, the PCB remains steadfast in its stance to ensure a successful and uninterrupted tournament,” stated the board. The PCB further dismissed rumors about the final being moved, saying, “There is absolutely no truth to the reports suggesting that the Champions Trophy final could be moved outside Pakistan.”
ICC Yet to Make an Official Statement
As of now, the ICC has not made any official statement regarding potential venue changes. However, there have been discussions about a hybrid model, similar to the 2023 Asia Cup, where India played its matches in Sri Lanka due to political issues. The 2025 Champions Trophy is one of the major events on the cricket calendar, just ahead of the World Test Championship final in June
