Day 12 of the Paris Olympics 2024 will turn out to be an action-packed and crucial day for the Indian contingent. Already, Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final. Today, the action will feature weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu. Joining her in this round-of-16 contest and exciting the Indian fans will be wrestler Antim Panghal, who will make her Olympic debut today.
It will be an action-packed day too. In addition to wrestlers and weightlifters, the country’s women’s table tennis team, comprising Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, and Archana Girish Kamath, will face hosts Germany in the quarterfinals. Star Indian golfer Aditi Ashok will also be in action during the first round of individual stroke play, and Avinash Sable will be competing in the final of the 3000m steeplechase.
Vinesh Phogat is one step away from creating history, entering the final contest of the 50kg freestyle wrestling at Paris Olympics 2024. For her, her opponent in the gold medal fight would be USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt. Phogat made the final on 6 August with three good victories in a row. More importantly, she beat top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the opening round. Next, she fended off former European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals before going on to win against reigning Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba in the semifinals. If Phogat could defeat the 6th-seeded Hildebrandt, she would be the first-ever Indian wrestler and woman from the country to take Olympic gold.
Manika Batra
Quarterfinals of the women’s table tennis today will see Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, and Archana Kamath of the Indian women’s table tennis team take on Germany. The trio’s confidence will be high after being led by an invincible Manika Batra, who defeated both her singles opponents before partnering with Archana Kamath to win the deciding doubles pairing for a 3-2 victory in the round of 16 against Romania, looking to make it to the semis today.
Mirabai Chanu
It will be a comeback event in the women’s 49kg weightlifting at the Paris Olympics 2024 by India’s Mirabai Chanu. This Tokyo 2020 silver medalist will look to create history as she guns for her second Olympic medal. Chanu sealed the only weightlifting quota available for India at the Paris 2024 games and booked her place with a finish in third place at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket.
