Pakistan Head Coach Gary Kirsten Slams Team
Pakistan’s poor showing in the tournament resulted in an early exit at the group stage, a stark contrast to their runner-up finish in the previous edition. Their lackluster performance included a shocking defeat to tournament newcomers USA, followed by a loss to arch-rivals India. Although Pakistan managed a consolation win over Ireland, it was too little, too late.
“There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” Kirsten said as per reports quoting a senior scribe.
According to PTI, Pakistani media reports indicate that Kirsten, who led India to an ODI World Cup victory in 2011, was forthright in his assessment of the team’s failures following their elimination from the T20 World Cup. His candid comments highlight the urgent need for the Pakistan cricket team to address the evident lack of cohesion and unity if they hope to recover from this disappointing campaign.
“Disappointing loss, that’s for sure. I knew 120 was not going to be an easy target. If India got only 120, it was always going to be not the easiest. But I think we had the game at 72 for 2 with six or seven overs left. Disappointing not to get across the line from the position we got ourselves into.” he added.
Sources cited by Geosuper.tv revealed that Kirsten also expressed dissatisfaction with the players’ fitness levels and noted that the team’s skill level is significantly lower compared to other international teams. Following Pakistan’s loss to India, Kirsten attributed the defeat to poor decision-making by the team.
In their final match of the T20 World Cup, Pakistan secured a victory over Ireland by three wickets. However, they had already been eliminated from the tournament due to previous losses to the USA and India. With this win, Pakistan finished third in Group A, having won two out of their four matches in the event.
