On This Day, September 30: The Kiwi opener, Martin Guptill is one of the best openers from New Zealand. He made his early impact quite early in his career. His first half-century came in the sixth Test match against Pakistan, which was played at Dunedin in 2009, while his maiden century was against Bangladesh in the year 2010, where the game was being played at Hamilton.
Career-Defining Moment!
In 2013, Guptill himself went on to write history as he helped New Zealand surpass a record for the highest individual ODI score ever in New Zealand’s history by an unbeaten knock of 189 against England at Southampton. He cemented his legacy when going on to break his own record in the final of the 2015 World Cup by raising an astonishing double-century not out against the West Indies, scoring an incredible 237. This score was such that it became the highest score recorded in World Cup history and also second-highest in the history of ODI cricket.
After winning matches during the World Cup, Guptill was again made into the Test side for the next tour to England. In 2018, he further consolidated his position as a destructive force in ODI cricket with an unbeaten 180 off 138 balls vs South Africa, and thereby finds himself as the possessor of New Zealand’s top three ODI scores.
