On This Day, October 7: South Africa celebrated the 2023 World Cup campaign in New Delhi when they crushed the record for the most runs made in any one inning at the World Cup, with a mountain of 428 as they scampered to a 102-run victory over Sri Lanka.
A good batting display in the match came in the form of three centuries from Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock, but most importantly Aiden Markram, the fastest hundred in the World Cup so far at the time when it came to balls; however, that is a record also broken later by Glenn Maxwell.
Historic.

Neither team could exert tight control over the run rate as five Sri Lankan bowlers conceded more than eight runs an over. Soon into the game, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka kept the team on par with a fine fifty laying groundwork, but the nature of the task was going to remain well beyond them with wickets falling in the process.

This was an exciting opener not only in showcasing South Africa’s best batting combination but also in building up excitement for the rest of the tournament.
