Young opener Shubman Gill, who missed India’s opening ODI World Cup 2023 match against Australia in Chennai and is continuing his recovery from dengue, will fly to Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
While the Indian team landed in Delhi on Monday to face Afghanistan, Gill stayed back in Chennai and was taken to a private hospital after he complained of severe fatigue but was subsequently discharged.
The 24-year-old is now on his way to recovering fully and will fly to Ahmedabad, a Cricketnext report said.
“Gill will be travelling to Ahmedabad from Chennai today in a commercial flight. He will continue with recovery and rest there, under the watch of the BCCI medical team,” a source told Cricketnext.
Addressing the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour said that Gill was recovering well and the hospitalisation was only a precautionary measure.
“He is recovering well. He was hospitalised, yes, but that was more as a precaution. He is back in the hotel; he is recovering well. So, being monitored by the medical team and whatever update we get, we are hoping that he will recover pretty soon. He is looking good actually,” said Rathour.
The batting coach further added that “hopefully Gill will be back in the mix pretty soon”.
Earlier, it was also reported that the senior national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet the Indian team management on the sidelines of the India versus Afghanistan match on Wednesday in Delhi and is set to take a call on Gill’s participation in the remainder of ODI World Cup 2023 matches.
Notably, Gill has been one of India’s best performing ODI players in recent times and has risen the ODI Batter Rankings and is now in second place only behind Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. Gill, who is the leading run-getter in 50-over format this year with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03, has hit two centuries and a half-century in his last four ODIs.
In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan opened the batting for India against Australia but he couldn’t do much and was dismissed for a duck. However, the left-handed wicket-keeper batter is all set to receive another chance to open the innings with captain Rohit Sharma against Afghanistan in the national capital.
