Reflecting its commitment to environmental causes, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that there will be no fireworks display during the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 matches in Mumbai and Delhi due to the deteriorating air quality in these cities, which have been a cause for concern.
Notably, the fireworks, light and sound shows, which adds to the viewer experience and the festive atmosphere at the stadium, have been quite the norm during the ongoing World Cup 2023 matches at all the venues in India. However, things are set to change in the upcoming matches in Delhi and Mumbai, where worsening air quality,
The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi persisted in the ‘very poor’ category at 370 on Wednesday morning, having deteriorated from 359 Tuesday evening. On the other hand, the data procured from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that the AQI in Mumbai stood at 168 on Wednesday morning, which falls in the ‘moderate’ category.
Jay Shah, the Secretary of BCCI formally addressed the matter with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and emphasised the urgent need to avoid activities that could further increase the pollution levels.
“BCCI is sensitive to environmental concerns. I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won’t be any fireworks display in Mumbai, which can add to the pollution level. The Board is committed to combating environmental issues and will always place the interest of our fans and stakeholders at the forefront,” Jay Shah said in a statement.
“The BCCI acknowledges the urgent concern surrounding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi. While we strive to host the ICC World Cup in a manner befitting the celebration of cricket, we remain steadfast in our commitment to prioritising the health and safety of all our stakeholders,” he added.
There are three more ODI World Cup matches scheduled to be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India will face Sri Lanka on Thursday, Afghanistan will take on Australia on November 7 while the first semi-final is scheduled on November 15.
The Rohit Sharma led India are slated to play their semi-final (if they qualify) in Mumbai unless it is against Pakistan, which will then be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
On the other hand, Delhi’s Arun Jaitely Stadium will host the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match on November 6.
