Pakistani cricket team faced another loss when they lost their initial ODI match following their T20 series defeat with a 4-1 result against New Zealand. The return of veteran players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan to the team failed to bring positive results to Pakistan's fortunes. A solid batting performance by Babar Azam and Salman Ali Agha during the first ODI match led Pakistani cricketers to suffer a terrible 73-run defeat.

When Mohammad Rizwan obtained the first toss advantage he chose to start the match with the bowling. The Kiwi batting performance started on a negative note from the beginning. The opening batsman Will Young managed to score 1 run before Nick Kelly added 15 runs to the total score. During the game Henry Nicholas managed to reach a score of 11 runs. Mark Chapman collected 132 runs at the fourth batting position during his brilliant performance.
