Nepal stuns West Indies – Historic first win over a full member

It was Nepal’s first T20I against the West Indies, and the start of their maiden bilateral series against a Full Member. And they made it count in emphatic style.

In a night to remember at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Nepal created history by defeating the West Indies by 19 runs, marking their first-ever win over a Full Member nation across formats. While they had famously beaten Afghanistan in 2014, the Afghan side was still an Associate back then. This win, however, feels bigger – not just for the result, but the moment it represents.

Put in to bat, Nepal stumbled early but regrouped thanks to Kushal Malla’s counterattacking 37 and a steady hand from captain Rohit Paudel (35). The innings had its share of drama – debutant Navin Bidaisee shone for the West Indies with 3 for 29, and Jason Holder’s triple strike in the 19th over threatened to derail the innings. But Nepal clawed their way to a competitive 148 for 8, aided by some inconsistent catching from the Windies.

In reply, West Indies started brightly but quickly lost momentum. A brilliant direct hit from Bhurtel removed Kyle Mayers early, and the Nepal spinners took over. Paudel, Lalit Rajbanshi, and Dipendra Singh Airee choked the scoring, while Nepal’s fielding was electric, highlighted by Airee’s run-out of Keacy Carty.

Needing 70 off the final five overs, West Indies couldn’t find answers. Even with late fireworks from Fabian Allen and Akeal Hosein, Nepal held their nerve, with Karan KC dismissing the Windies skipper in the penultimate over to seal the famous win.

This wasn’t just a victory. It was a statement. A new chapter in Nepal cricket has begun and the world is watching.
