India is celebrating National Sports Day on August 29, with full enthusiasm and zeal, and this time its specialty is that on this day the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 is also being started in the historic city of Rajgir in Bihar. This day is especially important as it is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of the great hockey player Major Dhyanchand, who has left an indelible mark in Indian sports history.
Every year on 29 August, National Sports Day is celebrated to pay tribute to Major Dhyanchand. Known as the “Wizard of Hockey”, Dhyanchand won India three consecutive gold medals in the Olympic Games of 1928, 1932 and 1936. In honor of his unique achievements, this day started being celebrated as National Sports Day from the year 2012.
This day is not only limited to remembering a great player, but it also carries forward the message of making sports and fitness an important part of the lifestyle. On this occasion, players and coaches who perform well in different sports are honored with National Sports Awards.
This year’s event is being organised under the ‘Fit India Mission’ by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. A national campaign titled ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ has been launched, which will run from 29 to 31 August. It aims to motivate people to do at least one hour of physical activity every day.
In an official statement issued by the Press Information Bureau, the ministry said, “This initiative is aimed at increasing the understanding among people that at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily can help prevent lifestyle diseases.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on his X handle and wrote, “Greetings on National Sports Day! On this special occasion, we pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji, whose excellence continues to inspire generations.
