Aussie cricketer Nathan Lyon said that Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of his biggest coaches during his career.
The 36-year-old regarded Ashwin as one of the best spin bowlers in the world and said that he has been one of his biggest inspirations.
“You look at Ashwin, he’s a world-class bowler and somebody I’ve watched closely from the start of his career. We’ve gone head-to-head many times in different conditions around the world. I’ve got nothing but respect for Ashwin and the way he’s gone about it. I’ve definitely learned from him.” Lyon said in an interview.
Having started his red ball career in the same year as Ashwin, both spinners are only behind England’s Stuart Broad in terms of taking wickets in the format.
Ashwin is also close to the 500-mark with the 37-year-old at 489 wickets in 94 matches for Team India.
“There’s an opportunity to learn from the people you play against, and without knowing it he’s probably been one of my biggest coaches in a way. It’s pretty amazing to see we’re both creeping up to that 500 mark, and we’ll see where we end up. Hopefully at the end of our career we’ll sit down and have a nice feed and a beer and talk about it,” Lyon added.
Lyon on his way to a Historic Landmark
Lyon has been in the ranks for many years now and is very close to reaching 500 wickets in Test cricket. He is only 4 wickets away from the feat which has only been achieved by three players till now – Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Anil Kumble.
As Australia take on Pakistan in the 3-match Test series, the stage is set for the Aussie spinner to reach the milestone.
