Spain’s Davis Cup Captain David Ferrer remains tight-lipped On Whether Rafael Nadal will be featuring in Tuesday’s quarterfinal against Netherlands. He will be forefronted by world number three Carlos Alcaraz in the singles. Ferrer has until one hour before the first singles match starts at 5 pm local time to announce his line-up.
One last run
Missing the U.S. Open and Laver Cup over fitness concerns, he was a surprise selection for the November 19-24 Finals featuring eight countries after last competing at the Paris Olympics in July. The 38-year-old announced last month that he was putting an end to his glittering tennis career after the Davis Cup final. He said he was not dwelling on his impending retirement and only focusing on helping Spain claim the trophy this week. He said,
“If I’m on the court I hope to control my emotions. I’m not here to retire. I’m here to help the team win. It’s my last week in a team competition and the most important thing is to help the team.”
Nadal and Davis Cup
He won 92 titles in his career, spanning over more than two decades. Nadal had already come into the spotlight courtesy of his performance at the Davis Cup, before winning his maiden Slam at Roland Garros in 2005. Spain won the last of its six Davis Cup titles in 2019 when Nadal spurred it to victory in Madrid. Eight nations will be contesting the Davis Cup Final Eight in Malaga this week.
