Chennai Super Kings (CSK) exited the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs after losing their final league match to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday. CSK’s Net Run Rate was marginally lower than RCB’s, which meant Faf du Plessis’ side missed out on advancing despite both teams finishing on 14 points each. CSK fans were disheartened not just by their team’s elimination but also by the possibility of MS Dhoni retiring. However, a CSK official has clarified that Dhoni has not yet informed the franchise about his potential retirement.

In a conversation, a senior CSK official attributed the change of ball in the final over of the match, following Dhoni’s 110-meter six, as a significant factor in their defeat to RCB. This change ultimately led to Dhoni not being able to fulfill his promise of lifting the IPL trophy at Chepauk.
“The ball was lost and had to be replaced. Dayal got a drier ball and suddenly hitting became difficult,” a senior CSK official said.
A report also discloses that Dhoni returned to Ranchi on Sunday itself and was the first member of the CSK camp to depart, deeply affected by the outcome against RCB.

Regarding the significant decision about Dhoni’s future, a source informed the paper that Dhoni has not informed anyone at the franchise about his plans. He has advised the management to wait for a couple of months before making the final call.
The ‘Impact Player’ rule, which has faced criticism from several active cricketers, could influence Dhoni’s decision on retirement. If the rule remains in place, Dhoni might choose to continue playing as it allows him the freedom to fulfill a specific role within the team. However, if the rule is abolished, it could make Dhoni’s return to the team more challenging, given his status as a veteran wicket-keeper batter.
The CSK official stated that they will wait for Dhoni’s communication, noting that Dhoni always has the best interests of the team in mind. They will see what happens regarding his decision.
