Monte Carlo Masters: Carlos Alcaraz Shines In Monaco! Clinches First-Ever Title After Beating Lorenzo Musetti

Carlos Alcaraz wins his first Monte Carlo Masters title, defeating Lorenzo Musetti in three sets to claim his sixth Masters 1000.

The young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz clinched his maiden Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in a hard-fought final. The 21-year-old Spaniard came from a set down to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, wrapping up the match in just under two hours and claiming his sixth ATP Masters 1000 title.

With this win, Alcaraz starts the European clay-court season on a high note as he prepares to defend his French Open title at Roland Garros.

Alcaraz had a nervous beginning, losing his initial two service games and making 14 unforced errors, which enabled Musetti to win the first set. But the momentum soon reversed in the favor of the Spaniard in the second set, as he surged to a 4-0 lead and easily won it 6-1.

In the deciding set, Alcaraz broke Musetti twice in the beginning of a commanding 3-0 lead. Musetti, in his first Masters 1000 final appearance ever, took a medical time-out to deal with a right leg issue but fought on. Still, he couldn’t match, with Alcaraz taking 12 of the last 14 points to seal the championship.

“It’s not the way I wanted to win. Lorenzo had a difficult week with long, hard matches. I sympathize with him—it’s not easy,” Alcaraz stated during his post-match interview. “I’m extremely happy to win Monte Carlo for the first time. It was a hard win, and I had to get through a lot of obstacles both on and off the court. To see my hard work pay off here makes me extremely happy.”

Ever since he lifted last year’s French Open trophy, Alcaraz has been overpowering on the clay courts with a 17-1 single’s record. His lone setback in that tenure was to Novak Djokovic in Paris 2024 Olympic final.

The win at Monte Carlo also has an impact on his ranking—Alcaraz moves to world No. 2, ahead of Germany’s Alexander Zverev, when Monday’s new ATP rankings are posted.
