Mithun Manhas, former Delhi captain and Director of Cricket for Jammu & Kashmir, has been appointed as the new BCCI President, chosen over cricketing legends like Sourav Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh. He brings with him years of experience and strong ties within the cricketing community.
The presidency, ratified at the BCCI AGM on Sunday, reflects the decision-makers’ intent to keep the highest administrative post in Indian cricket firmly in the hands of former players.
Manhas, widely respected for his work with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, served as Director of Cricket and played a key role in transforming cricket infrastructure in the region. According to a report by News18, he was highly hands-on in the role, ensuring that facilities in Jammu and Srinagar received significant upgrades. He also played a crucial role in the relaying of pitches across the state and had a transformative impact on local cricketers.
Manhas’s Career in the Indian Premier League
Manhas played in the Indian Premier League, representing Delhi Daredevils. In the fourth season of the IPL, he was reportedly contracted for USD 260,000 by Pune Warriors. In the seventh season, he was signed by Chennai Super Kings.
Domestic Career
Manhas captained the Delhi team for much of the 2000s. He led the side when Delhi won the Ranji Trophy in 2007–08, although Gautam Gambhir captained the team in the semi-final and final. During that first-class season, Manhas scored 921 runs at an average of 57.57.
In 2015, he joined the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team for the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy season.
