New Delhi: The third ODI between India and England women’s teams at Lord’s has garnered a global controversy in the cricketing fraternity and followers.

The batter Chalie Dean was at the non-striking end. As soon as the baller Deepti Sharma was about to throw the ball, Dean left the crease. Sharma hit the wickets and appealed for a run-out through ‘Mankading’.

This once again initiated a global discussion among the cricketing fraternity. This has divided the cricketing world into two factions. One side claims this is against the spirit of the game. On the other hand, some say this is in alignment with the rules laid down by the ICC.

Players like R Ashwin, Sam Billings, James Anderson, and James Taylor were among the ones who joined the debate.

What is Mankading’s law?

Recently, ICC has made some changes in the rules regarding ‘Non-striker leaving his/her ground early’. As per ICC Law 41.16 clause 1, if a non-striker is outside the crease before the bowler has released the ball, the bowler has every right to run out that batter. It was counted as unfair means earlier but now the new MCC rules have changed this.

The ICC Rule 41.16.1 states that, “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out. In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is put down by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.”

Mankading was started by Vinoo Mankad

It is called Mankading because it was started by a player named Vinoo Mankad. For the first time this incident happened during the India and Australia series in 1947-48. Team India’s bowler Vinoo Mankad, who went to Australia, had dismissed Bill Brown in the same manner in the second Test.

Mankad had run out Brown in the same way during the Australia-11 match. After this the Australian media named it Mankading. Before the ICC rule came into force, Ravichandran Ashwin adopted this method in the IPL. Ashwin dismissed Rajasthan Royals player Jos Buttler in this way in 2019. Although the ICC has validated it now.
