Manchester City strolled into the fourth round of the FA Cup with an 8-0 thrashing of League Two side Salford City at the Etihad Stadium, highlighted by a hat-trick from James McAtee. It was a comprehensive performance from City, with several key players contributing to the one-sided affair.

McAtee’s Hat-Trick & Doku’s Brace

James McAtee was the man of the match, scoring a brilliant hat-trick, while Jeremy Doku netted twice. Jack Grealish also ended his long goal drought, and youngsters Divin Mubama and Nico O’Reilly added their names to the scoresheet. Salford, owned by the famous ‘Class of 92’ group, including Gary Neville, was subjected to relentless pressure, much to the delight of City fans.

Despite the lack of Neville’s presence at the match, two former United stars, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, were in the stands to see their club’s affiliate get utterly thrashed. Ryan Giggs, Salford’s sporting director, sat in the technical area during this debacle.

Youngsters Shine In City’s Dominant Display

Pep Guardiola had made nine changes from the previous weekend’s win against West Ham and handed debuts to 20-year-old Mubama as well as opportunities for 19-year-olds O’Reilly and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. Simpson-Pusey was one of only two specialist defenders, along with Nathan Ake, but there was always depth in the City squad.

Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden were among the key players who had to watch from the sidelines as City took full control of the match early on.

Early Breakthrough And Relentless Pressure

City did not waste any time as they took the lead in the 8th minute. Matheus Nunes intercepted the ball and set up Jack Grealish, who passed to Doku, and the winger curled his shot past Salford goalkeeper Matty Young from a tight angle.

By the 20th minute, the lead was doubled when Savinho assisted Nunes, who then laid it off for Mubama to finish calmly. Salford tried to get back into the game with Kylian Kouassi and Kevin Berkoe coming close, but City continued to dominate.

Grealish And Doku Extend the Lead

Doku’s swift footwork assisted O’Reilly in scoring his first senior goal before the break, while after the interval, Grealish ended his goal drought when he was fouled by Salford’s Ossama Ashley and subsequently awarded a penalty, which he calmly converted.

City’s fluid play continued to shine as Nunes played in Doku, whose cross was expertly finished by McAtee to make it 5-0.

Penalties And McAtee’s Treble

Salford’s defense remained leaky, and they conceded a second penalty when Doku’s shot struck Curtis Tilt’s arm. Doku did not miss the chance from the spot, with Young being wrong to his right. Soon after, substitute Foden’s cross was controlled and slotted home by McAtee, his tally going up to two goals.

McAtee completed his hat-trick when he finished a Grealish cross in the 81st minute, clinching a thorough 8-0 win for Manchester City.

A Brutal Display Of Quality

The match was the stark contrast in quality between Premier League giants and their League Two opponents, with City showcasing attacking depth and clinical finishing. Salford had some moments, but this was, in general, a comprehensive victory for the hosts as they marched on into the next round with ease.
