Mahmudullah Retirement: Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder, Mahmudullah, has announced his retirement from T20 International cricket after the upcoming three-match series against India. Mahmudullah is currently 38 years of age.
His career in T20I cricket began way back in 2007 when he played against Kenya. His tenure of 17 years and 35 days stands third on the list of playing time for a T20I, behind teammate Shakib Al Hasan and Zimbabwean Sean Williams.

Mahmudullah, who had gone public last year in 2021, declaring his retirement from Test cricket, remains on board for ODIs. Having made a consistent impact in the 2023 Men’s World Cup for Bangladesh, his 328 runs are the best that have accrued from this Bangladesh campaign, with Mahmudullah being their top run-getter in the process.
Mahmudullah had decided to quit just after Shakib announced his T20I retirement with immediate effect during the second Test against India in Kanpur. On his career, Mahmudullah had said that he had taken the decision to retire from the T20Is well before Bangladesh’s series against Sri Lanka and now wants to concentrate on the ODIs, given that he will be available for the West Indies series in December and the Champions Trophy scheduled in 2025.
“I had already taken the retirement decision before coming to this series. I met with the captain and coach and also communicated with the BCB president. It feels like the right time to move on from this format and concentrate on ODIs,” he said.
Mahmudullah reflected on his career, mentioning that the loss to India in the 2016 T20 World Cup was a very frustrating moment where loss seemed to affect him quite violently. He mentioned, however, that he found great joy in the Nidahas Trophy in 2018, in which he hit an explosive 43 off just 18 balls that saw Bangladesh reach the final they could not achieve in the end.
“The loss to India in the 2016 World Cup was a life-changing moment for me; it taught me so much. In contrast, my best memory was during the Nidahas Trophy,” he shared.
Mahmudullah’s Stats
As many as 139 T20I matches were played by Mahmudullah and with those he scored 2,395 runs at an impressive strike rate of 117.74.
Along with this, he also takes 40 wickets. Time to recall the contribution he made towards Bangladesh cricket before he shifts towards this new story of his career.
Mahmudullah’s Records
In the 2015 ICC World Cup, Mahmudullah made history by scoring back-to-back centuries—first against England and then against New Zealand—becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to achieve a World Cup century and the second overall to score consecutive hundreds.
On his Test debut, he took 8 wickets in the match against Zimbabwe, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings.
