Lionel Messi was the star performer for Inter Miami as the team clinched its first ever Major League Soccer title with a 3-1 victory over Vancouver White Caps on Saturday at Chase Stadium in Lauderdale. The Argentina star set up two goals and triggered celebrations among his fans as their team won the maiden title.
Miami started strong as they scored early through a goal by Edier Ocampo but it was equalised in the second half by Ali Ahmed. The Whitcaps were in control and even took the lead later when when Emmanuel Sabbi’s shot rattled both posts.
The momentum seemingly favoured Vancouver at first but Messi stormed in and seized the moment. Messi caught the lapse by mid-fielder Andre Cubas and he immediately dispossessed him, surged forward and provided a precise assist for teammate Rodrigo De Paul to get Miami back on the lead. In injury time, Messi again set up Tadeo Allende to make it 3-1, sealing the historic win.

The victory marked a huge dream come true moment for co-owner David Beckham, the former England and Manchester United legend. He wished for the victory since a very long time and it was Messi who helped fulfill his dream. Vancouver on the other hand put in great efforts – the German veteran Thomas Mueller tried to give his best but they could not recover from De Paul’s decisive goal.
