‘Khudahafiz Abid Chicha’, Harsha Bhogle Mourns The Loss Of Syed Abid Ali

Former India all-rounder Syed Abid Ali, who played 29 Tests and 5 ODIs, passed away on Wednesday at 83.

Former India all-rounder Syed Abid Ali, who represented the country in 29 Tests and 5 ODIs, passed away on Wednesday. The sad news was confirmed by a source from the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).

“Yes, Syed Abid Ali has passed away in the United States, where he was living with his daughter,” the source said. He was 83 years old.

Abid Ali, a prominent figure in Hyderabad’s first-class cricket, scored 1,980 runs in Tests and took 47 wickets. In ODIs, he scored 187 runs and claimed 7 wickets.

He had an illustrious first-class career, playing 212 matches, scoring 11,336 runs, and taking 397 wickets. Abid Ali made his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide in December 1967 and played his final Test match against the West Indies in Delhi in December 1974. He made his ODI debut in July 1974 against England in Leeds and played his last ODI against New Zealand in June 1975.

Harsha Bhogle On Syed Abid Ali

“My first cricket hero. Rejoiced as a child when he had a great debut against Australia, was overjoyed when he scored the winning runs against England in 1971. Great trier, big hearted man. Khudahafiz Abid Chicha” Bhogle said on X-Platform.

Abid Ali was a key contributor in India’s historic 1971 series win against England in England, where he famously hit the winning runs. Tributes poured in from all corners of the cricketing world, with former India pacer Dodda Ganesh expressing his sadness on X: “Deeply saddened by the passing of one of India’s ace cricketers, Syed Abid Ali. Rest in eternal peace, sir. My thoughts and prayers with the bereaved family.”
