Keane Slams Rashford’s Move to Villa: A Step Forward Or Backward?

Rashford’s Man United transfer comes during a disappointing stint under manager Amorim, who could not make room for the forward in his strategies.

Rashford’s Man United transfer comes during a disappointing stint under manager Amorim, who could not make room for the forward in his strategies. Rashford’s suspected lack of application in training fueled speculations regarding his future for a long time till his transfer was confirmed with Aston Villa. His new club provided him with a chance to start again and improve his game under Unai Emery, a successful spell at Villa Park could lead to his reinstatement into the England squad under Tuchel. However, former Man United legend Keane questioned whether a move to Villa will work to drive Rashford to regain form, suggesting that form could not necessarily be resolved through a change in environment.

Keane Questions Rashford’s Hunger And Surprise Move To Aston Villa

Keane stated his concern related to Rashford in his interview with ITV just before Man United’s match with Leicester City in the FA Cup clash that “If he’s lost the hunger at Man United – how will he get it at Aston Villa? Once you lose the hunger it’s hard to get it back. It’s sad but it’s been on the cards for the last year or two, especially since the new manager has come in. Clearly, they didn’t get on.” He further said “The manager got no reaction from Marcus. The strange thing for me was I thought when Marcus was going to leave Man United he was going to go abroad and try something new. A new adventure for him, a different league, a different challenge. To go to Villa surprises me a little bit. I know Aston Villa are going along nicely, but you can’t compare them to Manchester United.”

Rashford’s Struggles At Man United And The Road Ahead At Aston Villa

Even though Ruben Amorim started him in his first six games, Marcus Rashford was soon out of the team, and his absence in the Manchester derby in mid-December clearly did not please him. The last time he played for United was on December 12 in a Europa League game against Viktoria Plzen, and after that, he never played again. Now facing a pivotal period at Aston Villa, where his motivation and long-term prospects are under the scanner, Rashford has clearly decided to seek a fresh start. He could get his first chance to make an impact at Villa on February 9 when they play Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round.
