Joe Root Joins Elite List As England Win Test Series Against New Zealand

England batter Joe Root ended up the NZ vs ENG 2024-25 Test series by joining elite list. The three-match series was won by England by 2-1.

New Zealand were able to achieve a 423-run victory over England in the third Test of the three-match series played at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. The Kiwis wrapped the 234 runs in the second innings while defending a total of 657 runs. Kiwi all-rounder Mitchell Santner ended up picking up a four-wicket haul in the second innings which proved to be decisive in the match and the hosts avoided a white-wash. Despite losing the match, there was a bit of joy for England as batter Joe Root added his name in an elite list. Root became the first ever touring batter to hit 1006 runs against the Kiwis and included eight fifty-plus scores which gives him the record of hitting the most half-centuries by any visiting batter in New Zealand. Root played a knock of 54 runs from 64 balls in the second innings of NZ vs ENG 3rd Test.

Getting back to the match, New Zealand achieved a first-innings score of 347 runs wherein Tom Latham and Mitchell Santner played innings of 63 and 76 runs respectively which allowed the Kiwis put up a decent first innings score. After a decent batting performance, Kiwis shined with the ball as well wherein Matt Henry, William O’Rourke picked up four and three wicket haul with the ball and wrapped up the English team for a first innings score of 143 runs.

New Zealand put up an even better batting performance in the second innings wherein Kane Williamson ended up playing a knock of 156 runs from 204 balls. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell played innings of 60 runs each which allowed Kiwis put up a score of 453 runs in the second innings putting up a big target for the visitors. At one end, it looked England may chase down the target but their second innings got wrapped up for 234 runs.
