Top-ranked Italian Jannik Sinner started his US Open 2025 campaign in a very dominant fashion as he defeated Czech debutant Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in just a span of one hour and 38 minutes. The 24-year-old showed no signs of the illness that forced him to retire from the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz last week, raising concerns about his fitness heading into the tournament.
Sinner is currently the World no.1 and he was very sharp and clinical in court as he broke Kopriva’s serve seven times and controlled the match from the start till end.
But one important thing that Sinner emphasised on after the match was the need to prioritise health and take proper rest.

“Back in the days, I used to practise two hours on days off, in the court,” said Sinner, who is a four-time major champion. “Now I understand that, if you feel the ball and everything, it’s better to rest, to have as much energy as possible then for the next day for the match so you’re not drained.
“All these kinds of things, whether you have physio in the hotel or here, how much time you want to spend here on site or you want to leave as soon as possible. I did learn that I just come to work and then get out of here, because it can be very long at times. So managing everything together, and I think I’m learning. I’m not perfect, but I’m learning.”
