Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has reacted to recent reports that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have shown interest in trading for Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals (RR) in an IPL trade. In a Cricbuzz report, Samson, who is currently captain of the Royals, has been identified as a player who has garnered attention from several franchises, with CSK being a standout interested party.
A CSK spokesperson, speaking confidentially, admitted the franchise’s interest:
“We’re certainly looking at Sanju. He’s a tried Indian batsman, a wicketkeeper, and an opener – something we rate very highly. If he becomes available, we’d definitely look at the option of getting him in. But it’s still early days and we’re not to the point of negotiating trade terms or who could be traded,” the official was reported to say.
In spite of the increasing hype, neither Samson nor the two franchises have given any confirmation. However, speculation has gained momentum after Chopra’s recent statements on his YouTube channel, in which he hinted at a high-profile player exchange if the trade were to continue.
“Will the trade take place? CSK have expressed interest, but negotiations haven’t reached the stage of discussing particular player exchanges,” Chopra was quoted as saying.
“If things do become serious, Rajasthan could demand a blue-chip player in return – maybe Ravindra Jadeja or even Ravichandran Ashwin. They’re entitled to make such a demand.”

Chopra elaborated on why CSK’s pursuit of Samson is an understandable step, especially with the franchise having to look ahead to life after MS Dhoni.
“It is very much in line with CSK’s thought process. Sanju fills several boxes – he is a good keeper, an able top-order bat, and has leadership skills too. With Dhoni retiring in the near future, Samson might be a long-term answer,” he added.
Whether the trade, if it happens, will be done through player-to-player exchange or in the form of an all-cash deal is still unclear. One thing that is for sure is that Sanju Samson has been a pillar of strength for Rajasthan Royals since his return to the team in 2018, and has held the captaincy since 2021.
Interestingly, Samson also has a distinction of his own – he’s the only IPL player in history to have hit 50-plus runs on the opening game of the season for six straight years playing for RR.
As trade negotiations make slow progress towards the new season, everyone will be keeping tabs on how this possible blockbuster deal goes.
