Brock Lesnar’s WWE career might be over sooner than most expect. John Cena will hang up his boots as a WWE superstar on December 13th at Saturday Night’s Main Event when he meets Gunther for the first and last time. Regardless of the outcome, Cena has stated that this will be his final match.
John Cena hints at Brock Lesnar’s possible farewell
The upcoming WWE SummerSlam 2026 will be held at US Bank Stadium on August 1-2. During his talk regarding retirement, Cena made a reference to one of his fiercest competitors, Brock Lesnar, who, he said, might retire at the Minnesota SummerSlam.
“He’s a beast. It’s his first time back. I’ve been in this seat before. It’s like I’m always in the seat when Brock comes back, Rock after Miami, who’s the next guy? SummerSlam with Roman, here he comes again.
After he beats Taker for the streak, I’ve sat in this seat before. You have to figure out who gets the shine that night and if, in his return again, only my perspective. This attraction, where we are going to build until he goes into the sunset, which is, I think, in Minnesota? Creatively, it’s very soon. To create a mountain to climb for someone, you have to build the mountain.”
Lesnar’s WWE run marked by absences and dominance
Brock Lesnar is a 48-year-old man, just like John Cena. He was already a WWE trainee with John Cena in OVW 25 years ago and was promoted to the main roster in 2002, a few months earlier than Cena. Lesnar left WWE in 2004 and did not return until 2012, thus having an eight-year hiatus, however, he has been in WWE for around 13 years of that time. It might be that Lesnar is contemplating retirement, but being a man of very few interviews, it’s really hard to guess what he is thinking.
Brock Lesnar’s dominant return fuels retirement speculation
Brock Lesnar, after a two-year hiatus, made a comeback to WWE and defeated John Cena with a clear-cut victory at Wrestlepalooza in September. Not only that, Lesnar was also part of the team led by Paul Heyman, who won the WarGames match at Survivor Series. Lesnar’s record for this year stands at 2-0, and he will probably not have any more matches in 2025. As for 2026, Lesnar is already listed as one of the major stars who might hang up their boots.
Meltzer hints at possible 2026 retirement runs for WWE Veterans
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer discussed Lesnar, AJ Styles (who has declared his retirement in 2026) and possibly Chris Jericho, who is most probably coming back to WWE in early 2026.
“There is a story going around that Lesnar will retire at SummerSlam 2026. I can’t confirm that date, but did at least a month hear that the working plans for 2026 would be the WWE retirement runs for Lesnar, (AJ) Styles and potentially (Chris) Jericho if he signs.
I didn’t get the impression it was locked in except for Styles, who has made it clear it will be in 2026 but not when. But the Lesnar name has been talked about, which is probably where the story came from.”
