Just an hour before the IPL auction began in Abu Dhabi, Sarfaraz Khan sent out a strong message to franchises with a breathtaking knock in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Elite 2025 match against Rajasthan at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
The Mumbai batter smashed a rapid 73 off just 22 deliveries, bringing up his half-century in only 15 balls, showcasing his explosive hitting and underlining his value as a dangerous T20 prospect on the eve of the auction.
As the IPL 2026 mini auction draws closer, one question has been at the centre of discussions among fans and franchises alike: will teams be allowed to use the Right To Match (RTM) card in Abu Dhabi?
The auction for the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, in Abu Dhabi, marking the third consecutive year the event is being held overseas. Unlike last season’s two-day mega auction in Jeddah, this will be a mini auction, with franchises looking to fine-tune their squads rather than rebuild from scratch.
Teams were required to finalise their retentions by November 15, leading to contrasting strategies across the league. While franchises such as Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders freed up considerable purse space by releasing multiple players, others, including Mumbai Indians, chose stability and are expected to make only a few targeted signings.
Amid the speculation, the IPL Governing Council has confirmed that RTM cards will not be in play at this auction. The RTM provision is reserved solely for mega auctions, where limits on retentions are designed to create a competitive reset across the league.
First introduced ahead of the IPL 2014 mega auction and later used in 2018, the RTM rule allowed franchises to reclaim released players by matching the highest bid. However, the mechanism was discontinued prior to the 2022 season.
Since mini auctions allow teams to retain as many players as they wish beforehand, the RTM card becomes unnecessary. Consequently, bidding in Abu Dhabi will hinge entirely on purse management, smart recruitment and capitalising on gaps in rival squads, with no RTM safety net influencing auction strategies.
The next edition of the Indian Premier League is scheduled to run from March 26 to May 31, but uncertainty still surrounds the venue for the opening match. Traditionally, the season opener is hosted by the defending champions, which would make Bengaluru and the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium the natural choice after Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted the IPL 2025 title.
However, while the iconic venue has received conditional clearance from the Karnataka state government, final approval hinges on meeting stringent safety and security requirements. These measures have come under sharper scrutiny following the tragic stampede during RCB’s title celebrations in June, which claimed the lives of 11 fans.
As authorities assess whether the stadium can safely host a marquee fixture, the league’s build-up continues elsewhere. The IPL 2026 mini-auction is set to take place in Abu Dhabi today, with three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders entering the bidding with the largest purse, positioning them as key players as teams fine-tune their squads ahead of the new season.
Rahul Chahar, who was snapped up as a player in the Chennai Super Kings team at a cost of Rs 10 crores. The trust of CSK in its spinners has never been a secret to anyone.
Yet another player chosen by KKR, Matheesha Pathirana, was also one of the most expensive picks. The Sri Lankan bowler was picked for Rs 13 crores, and this shows increasing interest in the services of the finest death-over bowlers. His action and Yorker skills have already made him one of the most sought-after bowlers for any T20 side.
Liam Livingstone was hot on his heels and was immediately poached by LSG for Rs 19 crores. For his knack of hitting sixavs and changing matches in a few overs, Livingstone’s all-round skills make him an ideally suited player in modern-day T20 matches.
Australian all-rounder Cameron Green also turned out to be the costliest pick in this mock auction. Chosen by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a humongous amount of Rs 30.50 crore, Green’s price truly deserves an ovation as he is a complete package in himself. Green has the capability of opening and scoring runs, has the ability to ball with seam, and also has the capability of providing stability for a long period of time.
Kartik Sharma - This 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, has gained more attention with Rajasthan's advancement into the knockout stages from Elite group D. The young player has scored 133 runs in five matches at a strike rate exceeding 160 while working hard in the middle order. His being able to do both wicketkeeping and finishing the innings at the same time gives him the kind of versatility which is often sought by many IPL teams.
Kunal Chandela - This 31-year-old all-rounder was at his best during the SMAT. He hit a total of 350 runs in seven matches with a strike rate of 150.86 and due to his great performance recruiters will be looking at him with interest in the auction.
Anmolpreet Singh - This 27-year-old batter has showcased another very good domestic season. He scored 241 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 172, and he is behind Abhishek Sharma n the tally of his team in SMAT. Anmolpreet had short IPL stints with SRH and MI in the past, but now he enters the 2026 auction in excellent form.
Mahipal Lomror - Mahipal Lomror, the uncapped Indian batter, is viewed as a bright prospect just before the mini-auction of IPL 2026. The all-rounder who hails from Rajasthan has a total of 527 runs in 40 IPL matches at a strike rate of 141.28 and more than 2100 T20 domestic runs, hence, he is the perfect choice for middle-order power-hitting among franchises.
Tushar Raheja - This player from Tamil Nadu, has got the right notice for his aggressive top-order batting. The southpaw has made 151 runs in seven SMAT matches with the help of a strike rate of 164. Besides this, he was the highest scorer in the 2025 Tamil Nadu Premier League scoring chart with a strike rate of 185. There are not many Indian wicketkeeper-batters with explosive qualities in this auction pool, thus Raheja might be a player that many teams would like to have in their squad.
Auqib Nabi Dar: This fast bowler from Jammu & Kashmir, has gained recognition as a potential player after his blistering run in Elite group B. He has taken 15 wickets in seven matches with an economy rate of 7.41. His skill includes the swinging of the new ball in both ways. Furthermore, he has a remarkable first-class record of 125 wickets from 36 matches, which is the reason why he is considered to be the best among the players and therefore might attract the attention of the franchises.
Tanush Kotian: The spinner had an incredible domestic season for 2023-24 that not only earned him the Player of the Tournament award in the Ranji Trophy. He, however, has not yet received a cap for international games and is still one of the most trustworthy uncapped players in the auction when it comes to financial matters.
Atharva Ankolekar: The year 2024 SMAT title could not have been possible without the excellent performance of Atharva Ankolekar, who was the most expensive player bought at the T20 Mumbai League 2025 auction, and he is now in line for a huge auction.
Ashok Sharma: The overall bowling performance of this year’s SMAT league stage has been Rajasthan’s Ashok Sharma, who took 19 wickets in seven matches. He can regularly bowl around 140 kmph and is being regarded as the upcoming Indian pace sensation. Previously, he has played for both KKR and RR franchises.
Raj Limbani: This right-arm medium pacer from Baroda drew attention with his outstanding 5/3 against Gujarat in SMAT. He was the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 dismissals and he might get a big auction bid for his talent.
2025 – Trent Boult
The left-arm quick returned as a premium buy, valued for his powerplay wickets and big-match temperament. Boult’s ability to swing the new ball made him a top priority.
2024 – Gerald Coetzee
Raw pace and aggression defined Coetzee’s rise. Franchises backed his wicket-taking instincts despite limited IPL experience, betting on his X-factor.
2023 – Cameron Green
Green’s all-round package drove his price sky-high. A tall fast-bowling all-rounder who can bat anywhere in the top order, he fit the modern T20 brief perfectly.
2022 – Ishan Kishan
Explosive at the top and an Indian wicketkeeper, Kishan became the most sought-after profile of the auction. Youth and versatility pushed his value through the roof.
2021 – Nathan Coulter-Nile
Known for his death bowling and lower-order hitting, Coulter-Nile attracted interest as a ready-made T20 specialist with international experience.
2020 – Nathan Coulter-Nile
Back-to-back strong seasons kept Coulter-Nile in demand. Teams trusted his consistency and calmness in pressure overs.
2019 – Barinder Sran
The left-arm pacer earned a big deal on the back of domestic performances and early international exposure, seen as a swing option for Indian conditions.
2018 – Krunal Pandya
A reliable spin-bowling all-rounder, Krunal’s value came from balance. His ability to bat in the middle order and control games made him a safe investment.
2017 – Karn Sharma
Leg-spinners were gold dust that year, and Karn’s IPL pedigree helped him secure a lucrative move despite limited recent action.
2016 – Jos Buttler
Buttler’s reputation as a destructive finisher was already well established. His 360-degree strokeplay made him one of the most exciting overseas buys.
2015 – Aaron Finch
Finch’s power-hitting at the top was the main draw. Teams banked on his ability to dominate the Powerplay on flat Indian pitches.
2014 – Michael Hussey
Experience was the keyword. Hussey’s calm presence and consistency made him a valuable anchor in an era still finding its T20 rhythm.
2013 – Glenn Maxwell
Maxwell’s breakout season changed perceptions overnight. His fearless hitting and off-spin option turned him into a box-office signing.
2012 – Thisara Perera
A classic utility all-rounder, Perera offered late-overs hitting and handy seam bowling, fitting the impact-player mould before it was a buzzword.
2011 – Rohit Sharma
Already a proven match-winner, Rohit’s move proved transformational. It laid the foundation for one of the most successful IPL legacies.
2010 – Kieron Pollard
The original T20 superstar. Pollard’s power and clutch performances redefined the value of an overseas all-rounder.
2009 – JP Duminy
Elegant yet effective, Duminy brought balance to the middle order with his batting and part-time spin.
2008 – Sanath Jayasuriya
The first IPL icon. Jayasuriya’s fearless approach at the top set the tone for what the league would become in the years to follow.
