Cameron Green may have missed the 2025 Indian Premier League season, but his time away from the tournament might just work in his favor. The young Australian all-rounder has been in outstanding form recently particularly in T20 internationals and his performances are likely to make him one of the most sought-after names ahead of the 2026 IPL auction.
A Blistering Return in T20Is
Green made his return to international cricket during the World Test Championship final against South Africa earlier this year. But it’s in the ongoing five-match T20I series against the West Indies where he has truly found his rhythm.
In four matches so far, Green has piled up 173 runs at a staggering strike rate of 160, averaging 86. What stands out even more is that two of his three half-centuries have come in successful run-chases and both were unbeaten efforts.
In the fourth T20I at Basseterre, Green delivered under pressure with a composed 55* off just 35 balls, laced with three fours and three sixes. His innings guided Australia to a three-wicket win with four balls remaining, reaffirming his status as a dependable chaser.
A Specialist in the Chase
Green’s T20I numbers while chasing speak volumes about his temperament and finishing ability. From nine innings while batting second, he averages 52, including five fifties and strikes at a ferocious 160. In contrast, while batting first, he has only one fifty in seven innings.
This trend continues in overall T20 cricket as well. Green has scored over 700 runs while batting second, averaging above 35 with a strike rate of 152 better than his strike rate of 145 when setting a target.
Given how IPL franchises increasingly value players who can chase under pressure, especially in crunch moments, Green’s current form could see his price skyrocket in the 2026 auction.
A Mixed Bag in Tests
While Green has impressed in white-ball cricket, his transition to a specialist batter in Tests has been a work in progress. Since being promoted to No.3 following his recovery from a back injury, he has scored just 188 runs in eight innings at an average of 23.
Still unable to bowl due to his lower-back surgery, Green has had to adapt to a new role in the team. It hasn’t been an easy transition, but considering his youth and potential, Australia remains invested in his long-term development in the red-ball format.
IPL Journey So Far
Green already has a solid IPL résumé. He featured for the Mumbai Indians in 2023 and was with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024. Across the two seasons, he scored 707 runs at an impressive average of 41 and a strike rate of 153 proving his ability to adapt to Indian conditions and the high-pressure nature of the league.
He opted out of the 2025 IPL season to focus on his recovery and rehabilitation following his surgery, which also ruled him out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
Looking Ahead to IPL 2026
With his back injury behind him and his T20 form peaking, Cameron Green is shaping up to be one of the headline acts at the IPL 2026 auction. His ability to chase, his versatility in the batting order, and his all-round pedigree – once he returns to bowling, makes him a complete package.
If his current run is any indication, Green’s time away from the IPL was less a setback and more a timely recharge. Expect bidding wars when his name goes under the hammer next year.
