IPL 2025: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to retain five key players ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, including the legendary MS Dhoni. Alongside Dhoni, the franchise will keep captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, batsman Shivam Dube, and Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana.
Financial Implications Of Retentions
While the exact amounts CSK will pay each retained player are yet to be confirmed, the team will lose at least INR 65 crore from their overall purse of INR 120 crore. After these five retentions, CSK will have one right-to-match option remaining for the auction.

MS Dhoni’s Unique Retention Status
At 43, MS Dhoni is likely to be retained as an uncapped player due to the IPL’s recent rule change. This new regulation allows players who haven’t participated in international cricket for five years to be categorized as uncapped. Dhoni last played for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup, making this classification applicable.
Upcoming Deadlines
The deadline for all ten franchises to submit their lists of retained players is October 31. Teams can retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped internationals and two uncapped players allowed.
The IPL has established minimum deductions from the auction purse for each retained player: INR 18 crore for the first, INR 14 crore for the second, INR 11 crore for the third, INR 18 crore for the fourth, INR 14 crore for the fifth, and INR 4 crore for an uncapped player. However, franchises have the flexibility to pay more or less than these minimum amounts.
