IPL 2025: After serving a ban, Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakh for a slow over-rate offence during his team’s 36-run loss to Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. This was Mumbai’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations.

Lost Against Gujarat Titans
After a narrow loss in their opening match against Chennai Super Kings, where Suryakumar Yadav captained in Pandya’s absence, Mumbai won the toss and chose to bowl on a black soil pitch in Ahmedabad. However, they couldn’t stop Gujarat from posting a challenging total of 196/7 in 20 overs. Mumbai’s chase faltered as they were restricted to 160/6, with Hardik managing only 11 runs off 17 balls before being dismissed.
Will Hardik Be Banned Once Again?
In the previous season, following the group-stage exit of Mumbai, Pandya had been banned for a slow-over rate offence while playing against Lucknow Super Giants. It was the third such instance in 14 games that MI had committed a slow over-rate, with the captain facing a ban, a Rs 30 lakh penalty, and penalty for the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player.
But the IPL modified the over-rate rules before the 2025 season. At a meeting of the captains in the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, it was agreed that instead of bans, captains will now get demerit points and fines for over-rate breaches.
