As the mega IPL player auction is set for later this year, the BCCI has begun finalizing the retention policy. At the same time, the franchises have asked the Indian cricket board to increase the number of player retentions for the next three seasons.
As reported by Cricbuzz, the 10 franchises have had differing opinions on this issue. However, most have requested an increase in the number of retentions compared to the previous allowance of 4 players per team. The final decision will be made later this month in a meeting with the team owners.
Hemang Amin, the Chief Operating Officer of the IPL, has reportedly spoken to the franchise CEOs to gather their opinions on the player retention policy and salary caps for the next three years.
Similar to the approach taken by the BCCI in 2021, the board is set to make decisions for the IPL 2025 mega-auction. They are also contemplating reintroducing the Right-to-Match (RTM) cards, allowing franchises to retain a player by matching the highest bid from another team before finalizing the sale, a rule that was not in effect in 2021.

It has been revealed that the majority of franchises have requested between five and seven retentions, with one team proposing eight. However, a few teams have voiced their opposition to having any retention policy at all. Additionally, there has been a suggestion to implement only the RTM (Right to Match) option without any retentions.
Discussions with franchises have included deliberations on the Impact Player role. Reports indicate that media rights owners favor this rule, while playing sides and coaching staff have shown less enthusiasm for it. Despite this, the BCCI is expected to maintain the Impact Player rule for the foreseeable future.
