Following his impressive performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Riyan Parag was reportedly considered a strong contender for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

Despite speculation among pundits about his potential inclusion in the middle order, Parag’s name was notably absent from the 15-member squad and 4 reserves announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, Parag himself expressed that he hadn’t viewed himself as a serious contender for selection.
Riyan Parag Not Surprised
Speaking to the media after Rajasthan’s loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Parag responded sharply to questions about his T20 World Cup omission, sarcastically remarking that he hadn’t even considered himself a contender to play in the IPL.
“Not really. Until last year, I was not even in contention to play in IPL right?” Parag said.
“So I have heard a few rumors. I am not on social media anymore. I heard a few noises here and there but I am just glad they are taking my name for the right reasons now. I was not thinking about anything. I am happy for the boys in our team, Sanju Bhaiya especially, getting the call-up. It is going to be great for our country and hopefully, we bring the World Cup home,” he added.
The Assam-born all-rounder also disclosed that he had decided to step away from social media but was still aware of the speculation surrounding his potential T20 World Cup inclusion.
Despite missing out on international selection, Parag has maintained a strong performance in the IPL, currently ranking fourth in the list of top-scoring batsmen. He has amassed 409 runs in 10 matches, boasting an impressive average of 58.43 and a strike rate of 159.14.
