In what came as a shock to many fans and followers of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings’ MS DHoni will not be captaining the side in the 17th edition of the IPL. Ruturaj Gaikwad will be captaining the side in the tournament.

“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” CSK issued a statement on captaincy change.

The 42-year-old has clinched five IPL titles as captain of CSK, the latest victory coming last year when they triumphed over Gujarat Titans in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following this win, Dhoni put an end to speculations about his retirement by confirming his return for IPL 2024. It’s worth noting that Dhoni had announced his international retirement on August 15, 2020. Throughout his illustrious career, he led India to victory in the 2007 World Twenty20, the 2011 World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
