CSK vs LSG: Match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) saw the defending champions Chennai Super Kings fall to an 6-wicket defeat against a good Lucknow Super Kings side at Chepauk on April 23.
Gaikwad’s 2nd IPL Ton Goes In Vain
Opting to bat first, CSK opener Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for just 1 by a delivery from Matt Henry in the opening over. Despite this early setback, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Daryl Mitchell managed to give Chennai a respectable score during the powerplay. However, Mitchell’s innings came to an end at 11 runs, leaving CSK at 49/2 within 6 overs.
Ravindra Jadeja also failed to make a significant contribution, departing for just 16 runs. It was the dynamic partnership between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube that boosted the run rate for the home team.
Gaikwad’s exceptional century was complemented by Dube’s quickfire 66 off 27 balls, which included some powerful shots that energized the crowd in the final 5 overs. Their partnership of 104 runs propelled CSK to a competitive total of 210/4.
Gaikwad reached his century in just 56 deliveries, showcasing his excellent form with an unbeaten 108 in this match for the 5-time champions.
CSK skipper set an example for his team with his second century in the IPL, providing crucial inspiration at the right moment in their innings. Mohsin Khan, Matt Henry, and Yash Thakur each claimed one wicket, but their efforts were not enough to limit CSK to a lower total.
Stoinis’ Maiden IPL Ton Take LSG Home
In reply, LSG opener Quinton de Kock got dismissed on a duck in the first courtesy of a brilliant Deepak Chahar delivery. His opening partner KL Rahul also followed him into the pavilion pretty soon on 16 runs within the powerplay.
Nicholas Pooran who has saved LSG on many occasions also contributed with a well-made 34 which took the visitors closer to the mammoth target.
However, the star performer of the 2nd innings was Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis. The Aussie scored his maiden IPL century against CSK at a time when his team needed him the most.
It was Stoinis and Deepak Hooda who took the team over the finish line in what was a thrilling final over match on the night.
Matheesha Pathirana once again stood out with the ball for the hosts as he finished his spell with figures of 2/35.
