IPL 2023: Venkatesh Iyer becomes second KKR batter to score hundred after McCullum in 2008

New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) batter Venkatesh Iyer registered his name in the history book as he hammered hundred against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 16.

Venkatesh Iyer second after McCullum to score century for KKR

Iyer became the second player for KKR to scored the century for the side since Brandon McCullum, who struck the astonishing century (158* off 73) against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) match in 2008.

Second hundred of this season

The 28-year-old batter also became the second player to smacked century in the 16th edition of IPL. Harry Brook of Sunrisers Hyderabad had scored an unbeaten 55-ball 100 against Knight Riders to become the season’s first centurion.

Iyer’s IPL 2023 runs

The left hand batter scored his maiden hundred in just 49 balls. His previous best came last week against Gujarat Titans (GT) as he scored 40-ball 83. Iyer returned to pavilion after miscued a reverse-scoop shot to the fielder at short third-man, he scored 51-ball 104. His inning was studded with six fours and nine sixes.

Venkatesh on fire

After winning the toss MI’s skipper Suryakumar Yadav invited KKR to bat first, but KKR’s openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narayan Jagadeesan departed cheaply. After that, Venkatesh Iyer steadied the ship of Knight Riders. He smoked more sixes then boundaries in his innings. He smashed total of nine sixes in today’s match.

Back-to-back sixes from Iyer

Two maximums in a row! Riley Meredith first went full and outside off and was hit for a six! Then bowled it back of a length and into the pads. Venkatesh Iyer whipped this over deep square leg for six more runs. Sensational batting for the 28-year-old batter.
