Former cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra made a sarcastic comment on Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the Pakistani minister congratulated the Pakistan’s cricket team after their ODI series win over Sri Lanka.
On Friday, Pakistan was able to take an unmatched 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series by beating Sri-Lanka by 8 wickets in the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. On Saturday, Sharif posted a congratulatory message on the X platform for the teams spectacular performance and achievement.
Pakistan’s PM heaped much admiration on the PCB chairman and the Interior Minister of the country Mohsin Naqvi and his team in regard to their great efforts.
Praise From Shehbaz Sharif, A Prompt Dig From Aakash Chopra
“I congratulate our national team on winning the ODI series against Sri Lanka, and I commend Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi and his entire team for their great efforts. It was a wonderful display of cricket’s unifying spirit. My special thanks to the Sri Lankan players and management. Their participation once again reflects the enduring friendship between our two nations,” Sharif wrote on X.
Chopra was quick to respond to Sharif’s remark and took a subtle dig at him with a post on X, which read, “When winning a bilateral series is your only flex.”
Pakistan’s Ongoing Struggles
The statement made by the former cricketer has highlighted the struggles of the Pakistani team in the major ICC tournaments. The team has never won any title after winning the Champions Trophy in 2017. In 2021, Pakistan made it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, but failed to advance to the finals, and in 2022, they lost to England in the final.
Their performance continued to decline in the subsequent years, with early exits in the 2023 ODI World Cup, then in 2024 from the T20 World Cup, and then later in 2025 from the ICC Champions Trophy. Their team was also eliminated at the group stage contributing to the disappointment of the fans.
