On Saturday, India beat South Africa by seven runs in the 2024 T20 World Cup final at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. This victory ended India’s 11-year drought of winning an ICC tournament.
India won the toss and decided to bat, scoring 176/7. They were led by Virat Kohli’s 76 runs, supported by Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27). Earlier in the innings, South African bowlers had caused trouble for India.
In pursuit of 177 runs, South Africa lost two quick wickets. However, Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs aggressively played Indian spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. Heinrich Klaasen, scoring a quick 52, posed a threat to Indian fans before being dismissed by Hardik Pandya.
With South Africa requiring 30 runs in the final five overs, pacers like Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya bowled exceptionally well and restricted South Africa’s scoring.
The decisive moment for South Africa came when David Miller was caught brilliantly by Suryakumar Yadav near the boundary, sealing the victory for the ‘Men in Blue’. Hardik Pandya successfully defended 16 runs in the final over, securing a seven-run win for India.
Virat Kohli received the Player of the Match award for his crucial innings of 76 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, the leading fast bowler with 15 wickets in the tournament, was named Player of the Series.
This marks India’s second T20 World Cup win. The ‘Men in Blue’ clinched their first title in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, led by MS Dhoni.
Many well-known personalities, athletes, celebrities, and politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extended their congratulations to India for the achievement.
