India Women Vs England Women: Smriti Mandhana Smashes Her Maiden T20 Century, Becomes Second Indian To Achieve This Feat

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana registered her first T20I century in the opening T20I game against England played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. She achieved her hundred off just 51 balls, including 14 fours and 3 sixes. This was a defining moment in her career. Only till then, no other Indian woman had scored a century in women’s T20 Internationals. Harmanpreet had hit 103 off 51 balls against New Zealand in the 2018 T20 World Cup. Smriti has now become the second Indian woman to achieve this feat. With this outstanding innings, Smriti also became the first Indian woman cricketer to score a century in all three forms of the game – Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

Mandhana Leads in Harmanpreet’s Absence

Smriti was also the acting captain, as regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was absent because of a head injury. Mandhana batted with aplomb from the front and played her finest T20I innings till date. Her best so far in the format had been 87 off 56 balls against Ireland in 2023.

Strong Opening Partnership

Mandhana and Shafali Verma opened the innings, and the duo provided a good start for India. The two batswomen scored 77 runs off the first wicket, including 47 runs in the powerplay overs (1-6). Mandhana scored two sixes in the 7th over against Sophie Ecclestone, and by the 8th over, she had scored her half-century. Once Shafali got out, Mandhana went on to attack along with Harleen Deol. The two formed a good partnership of 94 runs. Mandhana scored two boundaries from Lauren Bell in the 16th over to score her hundred. Just after crossing the century mark, Deol got out for 43.
