India vs Australia: After Australia had reduced India to 7-wickets on Day 2, they were poised for a major breakthrough having dismissed Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja on Saturday. Half of the Indian batting already being back in the pavilion, the Aussies seemed to be in command.
However, a resilient eighth-wicket partnership between Washington Sundar (50) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (105*) turned the tide. The duo helped India avoid the follow-on and narrow the gap to Australia’s first-innings total of 474.
Sundar’s Confidence For The Remaining Days
With two days of play remaining, Sundar remains confident that India can not only avoid defeat but also potentially push for a win. Reflecting on India’s position, Sundar stated:
“I still feel there’s something for the bowlers in this wicket,” Sundar said after Stumps on Day 3. “It has been overcast for most of the game until now. If we can bowl in the right areas, take our chances, we should be able to get them for 150, and Day 5 will be all about that.”
Sundar-Reddy’s Fightback
Sundar and Reddy came together with India at 221/7, and Sundar’s 50 was crucial in stabilizing the innings. This marked his third Test half-century, and second in Australia.
The 25-year-old, who had been called up to replace Shubman Gill in the lineup, credited India’s coaching staff for their unwavering faith in him, especially in the longer format.
“Gauti bhai and the support staff kept believing in me, always encouraging me with what I could do at this level,” Sundar said. “It really means a lot and makes me believe I can do something special for India.”
A Missed Opportunity But A Strong Position
Sundar acknowledged that his dismissal towards the end of the day was disappointing, but he remained positive about India’s position in the match.
“I wish I could’ve gone on to score more runs, but I think we’re in a good place today,” he added.
Sundar’s Praise For Nitish Kumar Reddy’s Maiden Test Ton
On the other end, Reddy continued his solid innings, eventually reaching his maiden Test century. Despite Sundar’s departure, Reddy’s performance became the highlight of the day. Sundar shared his admiration for Reddy’s resilience and skill, reflecting on their time together in the IPL.
“He’s mentally very strong. I’ve known him for quite a few years, and the way he played today was amazing,” Sundar said. “He picked his moments well, knowing when to attack and when to defend, and his hundred will be talked about for a long time.”
Reddy’s Work Ethic & Special Talent
Sundar also highlighted Reddy’s work ethic and approach to the game, which have impressed everyone around him.
“One thing about Nitish is, no matter what he’s doing—on the field or off it—he gives 120 percent. That’s his approach to life, not just cricket,” Sundar concluded. “I’ve seen his work ethics closely during the IPL, and it’s clear something special is just around the corner for him.”
