IND vs AUS 1st SF: What a match! On March 4, 2025, in Dubai, India pulled off a thrilling chase against Australia, reaching 265/5 in 47 overs to overcome a target of 264. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, and here’s how the drama unfolded.

Winning the toss (Rohit’s 14th consecutive loss with the coin!), Australia opted to bat. But Mohammed Shami had other ideas, striking in the third over to dismiss young Cooper Connolly for a duck—caught behind at 4/1. With Jasprit Bumrah out due to injury, Shami took it upon himself to rattle the Aussies.
Travis Head looked dangerous, smashing 39 off 33 balls, reminiscent of his 2023 World Cup final heroics. But Varun Chakravarthy’s brilliant googly in the 9th over sent him packing at 54/2. This was a turning point—India’s spin attack found its rhythm.
Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey (61) built a solid foundation, taking Australia to 198/4 by the 37th over. At that point, a 280+ total seemed likely. However, Shami struck again to remove Smith at 198/5, triggering a collapse. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Glenn Maxwell for just 4, Axar Patel took out Marnus Labuschagne for 16, and Australia’s lower order crumbled, losing 6 wickets for just 66 runs. Hardik Pandya finished the job, dismissing Adam Zampa to bowl them out for 264 in 49.3 overs.
Shami’s 3/48 and Chakravarthy’s 2/35 played a crucial role in keeping Australia below their expected total.
Chasing 265 on a slowing Dubai pitch was never going to be easy. Openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started steadily, but Ben Dwarshuis sent Gill back for 8, bowled trying to guide one down. Soon after, debutant Connolly trapped Rohit LBW for 28, leaving India at 61/2 in 12 overs. The pressure was on—204 runs off 38 overs looked like a steep ask.
Enter Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Kohli played a masterclass, finishing unbeaten on 106 (off roughly 110 balls, packed with boundaries), while Iyer contributed a valuable 50. Their partnership of around 90-100 runs steadied the innings. By the 30th over, India was around 150/3, and the chase looked under control.
Adam Zampa tried to claw Australia back into the contest, dismissing Iyer with a deceptive googly around the 35th over, leaving India at 180-200/4. KL Rahul chipped in with a brief 15 before Dwarshuis struck again. But Hardik Pandya arrived with intent, smashing a rapid 30* off 15-20 balls. The defining moment came when Pandya hammered a boundary off Nathan Ellis in the 47th over, sealing the win with 18 balls to spare. The celebrations were electric—Kohli’s ton and Hardik’s finishing touch exorcised the demons of the 2023 final.
