India Vs Australia, 4th Test, Live Blog Updates: Australia’s Top Order Strikes Gold In Day-1

Australia's top-order dominated on Boxing Day, with debutant Sam Konstas setting the tone.

India vs Australia, 4th Test: Australia’s top-order dominated on Boxing Day, with debutant Sam Konstas setting the tone. The 19-year-old played a fearless knock, scoring 60 and taking on India’s best bowler, Bumrah, in a thrilling contest. His reverse scoops and aggressive strokeplay unsettled India early, helping Australia reach 311/6 at stumps.

Konstas’ innings laid the foundation, allowing Khawaja (50), Labuschagne (51), and Smith (68*) to build solid partnerships. Although India fought back late with Bumrah’s double strike and Akash Deep’s persistence, Australia’s top order capitalized on early opportunities.

The hosts lost a few quick wickets in the final session, but a 53-run stand between Smith and Carey ensured Australia stayed in control, with hopes of posting a big total on day two.

India Vs Australia, 4th Test, Live Blog Updates: It's STUMPS for DAY-1

Australia takes the honors as debutant Sam Konstas sets the tone with a fearless approach at the top of the order. He took on India’s best bowler, Bumrah, and came out on top. Konstas' efforts helped Australia register their first 50+ opening stand of the series, which kept the new ball from posing a threat to the middle order. Khawaja, Labuschagne, and Smith capitalized on the solid start provided by Konstas, each reaching fifty. India mounted a comeback in the final session, claiming 3 wickets for just 9 runs, but a crucial 50+ partnership between Smith and Carey guided Australia close to 300. Akash Deep, after putting in a lot of hard work, dismissed Carey with the second new ball, but Cummins saw Australia safely to stumps.

The pitch has been intriguing, appearing slow as outside edges fell short, but still offering enough for the pacers. We’ll get a better sense of its behavior once India begins their innings, but they’ll need to quickly take the final 4 wickets and prevent Australia from posting a large first-innings total.

India Vs Australia, 4th Test, Live Blog Updates: It's a TEA Break!!

15:13 Local Time, 04:13 GMT, 09:43 IST – Tea, Day 1: India put in a much-improved bowling performance during this session, but they only have one wicket to show for their efforts. Bumrah and Akash Deep were tight from the outset, consistently probing the batsmen. Akash Deep, in particular, troubled Khawaja, beating his outside edge several times, but India’s luck was out as the edges fell just short of the slip fielders. Khawaja reached fifty but got out in a soft manner. Labuschagne, meanwhile, has fought hard, taking a few blows and looking increasingly like his old self. Is this a slow pitch? Khawaja’s wicket and the outside edges not carrying suggest it could be, though we’ll have to see how it plays when the Australian pacers are bowling. That’s still a long way off, as India have 8 wickets to take and it doesn’t seem like they’ll get them anytime soon.

India Vs Australia, 4th Test, Live Blog Updates: Aus won the toss and elected tot bat first

India have beaten Australia at the MCG on their last two visits, in 2018 and 2020. That certainly augurs well for the visitors and that will give them a psychological boost. The visitors’ weakness in this series has been the disappointing returns of their bowlers apart from Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah has been sensational but he needs more support from the others. As far as Australia are concerned, their defeats to India in 2018 and 2020 are their only losses in Tests at the MCG since 2011. The surface at the ‘G suits their style of play. With temperatures potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius on the opening day, it will be a stern test for the players. Will the hot weather influence the captain’s decision-making at the toss? With clear skies expected throughout the majority of the Test, expect some fast-paced stuff...
