India vs Australia: After a brief break following the England tour, Team India is gearing up for a packed schedule, with the much-anticipated white-ball series against Australia taking center stage. The tour will feature three ODIs and five T20Is, marking India’s first ODI outing since the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. More importantly, it offers fans a rare chance to witness the return of two of India’s biggest cricketing legends, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the ODI format.
The Comeback of Two Giants
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last played ODIs during the ICC Champions Trophy. Their return is highly awaited, especially given the speculations surrounding their international futures after stepping away from Test and T20I cricket. Despite the ODI World Cup being two years away in 2027, both players have expressed their desire to continue representing India in the 50-over format.
Selectors, however, plan to adopt a cautious approach, gradually integrating these veterans back into the team. While no formal discussions about their long-term ODI futures have happened yet, the selection committee is expected to address this later in the year, focusing on building a roadmap toward the 2027 World Cup.
Currently, Rohit Sharma remains the ODI captain. Although there is a faction within the BCCI advocating for Shubman Gill to take over the leadership role, the board is keen to maintain stability and back Rohit, especially after his successful captaincy in recent ICC tournaments. The upcoming selection meeting will be crucial to understanding the direction the team takes on this front.

Squad Selection and Experimentation
The new BCCI selection committee is scheduled to announce the squad this weekend or early next week, with the team set to depart for Australia on October 15. The first ODI will be played on October 19 in Perth, and the final T20I is slated for November 8 in Brisbane.
While the ODI squad might see some experimentation, the core lineup is expected to remain largely consistent with previous outings. One likely change is in the wicketkeeping department – Rishabh Pant will miss the entire Australia tour, so KL Rahul will continue as the primary keeper, with Sanju Samson expected to serve as backup. Despite struggling in the Asia Cup, Samson’s overall ODI record, including a century against South Africa last December, makes him a solid choice for the role. Dhruv Jurel is also an option but Samson currently has the edge.
Managing Fitness and Rotation
Fitness concerns will play a role in squad decisions. Hardik Pandya, who missed the Asia Cup final due to a quadriceps injury, is still recovering. The BCCI sports science team will closely monitor his progress before deciding his availability for the T20I series. If Hardik is sidelined, players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube could vie for a spot.
Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the ODI series is also uncertain. Having committed to the two-match Test series against the West Indies, Bumrah might be rested for the first ODI and could feature in the later matches, depending on his workload management.
New Talent on the Horizon
Selectors might also look to give opportunities to promising youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has played only one ODI so far, could get a chance to showcase his talent, especially if Shubman Gill is rested for the ODI series to keep him fresh for the T20Is.
Mohammed Siraj is expected to make a comeback to the ODI squad after missing the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana are in contention to fill the pace-bowling spots.
Abhishek Sharma’s recent performances have sparked talk about his inclusion, but with Jaiswal ahead in the pecking order, Abhishek’s chances seem slim for this series.
India’s tour of Australia promises intense cricket and exciting moments, balancing experience with fresh talent. Fans will eagerly watch how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli readjust to the ODI format and how the new selection committee shapes the team’s future ahead of the 2027 World Cup. With the series kicking off soon, the excitement is palpable – both on and off the field.
